CJ's Elegance is the answer.
Orlean Dubuclet and Carol Jo, for whom the business is named, launched CJ's in a bedroom in the family home in April 1969 as a gift to celebrate Carol Jo's birthday. A year and a half later they moved to the Windsor Hills/ View Park area of Los Angeles, and began dressing professional and political powerhouses, socialites and celebrities in day to evening wear and couture, and have been a mainstay for over 44 years.
Orlean began selling lingerie and hosiery for years before joining forces with daughter Carol Jo, who studied fashion at Trade Tech and merchandising at UCLA, to open the women's clothing boutique. The shop sells unique and one of-a-kind looks that are cut to compliment every curve, a craft Carol honed working as a buyer for major department stores. Since 1969 retail, fashion, and the economy have changed but with a combination of business acumen, tenacity and mother wit, they have creatively and instinctively reinvented themselves by purchasing the building, downsizing its original retail space, and leased the adjacent shops to complimentary retailers. The couture clothing was no more, instead the ladies opted to sell mid-priced clothing that embodies a "Casual Elegance with ethnic Flair" to women 40 years to 80 years young.
Its now been over 40 years since Carol Jo and Orlean started selling clothes out of a bedroom. Today CJ's Elegance bears the distinction of being one of the oldest, black owned, women's retail clothing businesses in Los Angeles.
